Differences
of the Learning Styles between Standard Schools and International Schools in
Indonesia
Every middle of the year is time for increasing class and
graduation. There is a student who confuses to choose a senior high school, her
name is Sinta. Sinta is a smart student. In her junior high school, she got an
achievement from her principal because of her best final exam’s results. She
always efforts to improve her insight to be better. Her parents said that their
daughter had a dream to continue her education abroad. Since she has known that there are
international schools, she was very enthusiastic. So she seeks some information
about international schools. Her parents always agree with her choice. But why
does Sinta choose the international schools? There are differences of the
learning styles between standard schools and international schools in
Indonesia.
The first difference is the language. In the future,
competition will be more stringent. One of the keys to be able to follow the
competition is having ability of reading and speaking in English. So from now
on, we have to apply English wherever we are, in order to make us more familiar.
In international schools the daily language is English. So the students will
apply English every day and practice it at anytime. Thus the students train
automatically. While in standard schools, the students just use Indonesian
language as daily language. They use English only in English lesson. However
all of the cases have advantages and disadvantages. Being more ready to follow
the competition in the future is the advantage of international schools which
use English as their daily language. Being disable to apply Indonesian language
correctly is the disadvantage of presenting in international schools. In my
experience, when I observed in Global Prestasi School, there were many students
who faced up to the difficulties of solving final exam in Indonesian language.
Because there are some definitions of mathematics which have different
interpretations between using English and Indonesian language.
The second difference is teaching method.
Teaching method in international schools usually more dynamic, which is better
than the standard schools one. In the
standard schools, teachers become center learning. A lot of students in each
class have impact such as teacher cannot expand their students’ insight to be
larger. But in international schools, teachers do not become center learning
again. They use the depth learning method where teachers explain the material
simply and the students are given opportunity to seek information by themselves.
So the students will more understand to the concept from the base problem in
their lessons. Learning methods in general way have variation because
well-designed by virtue of learning methods in abroad.
The activities in the schools are also very affecting to the
development of the ability of the students. Activities in international schools
are longer than in the standard schools. There are not any activities on
Saturday in international schools, but in Monday until Friday the students go
home at 3 PM. There are 35 until 45 pupils in standard schools, but in
international schools, there are only 20 until 25 students. Look the case;
difference quantity of students is causing the attention of teachers, in
standard schools, the attention of teachers is more little bit than in
international schools. While if each student has the unique problems in
comprehension, this problem cannot be finished well. In the learning process at
international, class will look more effective than learning process at standard
schools. The teachers in international schools apply collaborative method in
their class. So the students will self-employed to solve the problem by themselves.
In the case, teachers just play role as facilitator to improve students’
knowledge. Students’ activities are more
referring to have discussion, presentation, debating, and seek the problem
solving. While the students in standard schools, mostly they study by
memorizing of lessons and comprehend the material by listening of the
explanation which teachers give to them or read the textbook. So the results
are the students of international schools more aggressive, smarter and more
enthusiastic to extend their opinions than the students of standard schools which
have difficulties to extend their opinions because of passive learning process.
The activities also need good facilities. Facilities in international school are
better than in standard schools. When I observed in Global Prestasi School ago,
facilities in international schools look more modern and more up-to-date with
development of technology in the world. In the first class elementary school,
the international schools have been applying the ICT tools. They often use the
ICT tools to develop their learning styles. In the future, role the knowledge
of ICT is also very important, despite ability of using English, using
technology is also very significant to improve the quality of education. While
in standard schools, there is still lack of ICT tools, even though in the
remote schools are worse than standard schools which also face up to the lack
of ICT tools.
Especially in the international schools are needed to our
country. Because if we want to develop and improve our future, we must start
improves from the education. Education is the important pillar and the first
pillar to improve our future. So the government has to establish international education
in Indonesia. Although there is much more disagreement with the existence of
this international schools, but this program opens a great opportunity for
young people who want to develop their insights. Unfortunately difference
language, teaching method and activities in standard schools and international
schools are very affecting to development of students’ ability in the schools. Difference
of daily language between standard schools and international schools led a lot
of effects which influence the development of the students. The second difference of learning method in international school is
more mature them than in standard schools, because they have prepared it
tidier. Teachers’ preparation and teachers’ creativities will make their
students more creative and enjoy joining the class. Thus activities between international schools and standard schools
are also very different. But there are not close the possibility of the standard
schools to compete with international schools. If the teachers try to apply some
methods which are used by the teachers in international schools, I hope that
the ability of students is increasing. This is our future, so I need your
participation to improve it together from now on.
